Three Awards for Sage Creek Canyon Home
September 28, 2009

The Summit County Builders Association held their 2009 Summit County Parade of Homes Sept 19-27. This year’s Parade featured 24 homes county-wide ranging in price from $700,000 to over $7 million. Kirs Herdt, of Austin Bluffs Lighting in Colorado Springs participated in the judging of seven homes in the $1.6-$2.5 million category. “It was tough choosing the winners this year because all of the homes were unique, creative and great workmanship. Summit County Builder’s Association should be very proud of the event and the homes represented by their membership.”
Mountain Log Homes of Colorado’s Sage Creek Canyon Home, designed by Denver Architect Brian Higgins of Raw Architecture, took home top honors in Exterior Elevation, Builder Concept and Landscaping. Brian L. Wray, General Contractor on the project expressed a special appreciation for the Builder Concept Award. “This is the most coveted award for me. As the builder, I don’t always have control over the final interior decorating or even the floor plan the homeowner and architect design. But I can make sure that my crew and all the subcontractors work together as a team to make sure the overall end product is the best it can be and meets the homeowners intent for a lovely livable home”. Not only is the home beautiful, but is also energy efficient. “This home was one of only 6 quantified Energy Star Homes in the 2009 Parade. We have made a commitment to sustainable building practices” By partnering with companies like Rocky Mountain Log Homes who used Sustainable Forestry Practices and only dead standing timber and Sierra Pacific Windows with a similar award winning commitments to the environment , Mountain Log Homes of Colorado will continue to offer quality homes with minimal impact on the environment.
The home features 4,300 sq. ft of living space with an expansive great room of full round 10”-12” logs from Rocky Mountain Log Homes of Hamilton Montana. The rest of the home features Native Moss Rock and custom Board on Board beetle-kill siding milled locally at Hester’s Mill. The setting is spectacular, located directly on the Blue River just north of the Silverthorne town limits with trout fishing just off a short landscaped walkway with log bridges. The landscaping was a collaborative effort with Neils Lunceford, who planted native plants and trees and recreated a series of wetlands between the home and river, and Rocky Mountain Stonescapes who designed an impressive curved driveway and walkway system of permeable granite pavers. A common comment from the over 1,000 guests who viewed the home during the Parade of Homes was “This is the most livable home we have seen on the tour. I want to move in!” If you are interested in building a log home in the near future and missed the September Tour, it is not too late. The home is available to be seen by appointment by calling 970-468-8683. Mountain Log Homes of Colorado also plans to feature a 3800 sq. ft. Western Red Cedar Handcrafted home in the 2010 Parade of Homes in Breckenridge. Check www.summitcountybuilders.org for details and dates.
A quarter of Colorado new homes qualify as ‘efficient’
Summit Daily News, Friday, October 2, 2009
The Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) announced Monday that ENERGY STAR new homes account ed for more than 26 percent of the new homes built in the first half of 2009 in Colorado. Should 2009’s strong start for ENERGY STAR new homes hold up for the rest of the year, Colorado would see its fifth consecutive year of percentage increases in homes that qualify as ENERGY STAR. Since 2004, the mar ket penetration of ENERGY STAR New Homes has increased from 4.2 percent to 19.4 percent in 2008.
Since July of 2008, at least 11 Sum mit County homes have been built to ENERGY STAR standards, accord ing to High County Conservation Center director Carly Wier. An ENERGY STAR home is typically 20-30 percent more energy efficient than homes built to code and are cer tified throughout the construction process. Better insulation, advanced air sealing strategies, and efficient heating systems and appliances are typically used to achieve better com fort and energy efficiency and the ENERGY STAR certification. ENER GY STAR homes also reduce greenhouse gas emissions through direct reductions in energy use.
“Summit County builders have been supporting Colorado’s new energy economy by choosing ENERGY STAR certification for their homes,” Wier said. Accord ing to the Energy Star website, there are currently six Summit County builders registered with the ENER GY STAR program, including: Mountain Log Homes of Colorado, Apex Mountain Homes, Greg Hess Construction, Hedges Mountain Homes, J & E Development, and Kodiak Enterprises. J & E Develop ment won the ENERGY STAR Award at the 2009 Parade of Homes.
Sierra Pacific Industries and Equator Announce
Largest U.S. Forest Carbon Transaction to Date
For Immediate Release September 30, 2009
Los Angeles, CA – California’s largest private landowner – Sierra Pacific Industries, and Equator, LLC, a natural resources asset management firm, announced today that they have entered into the nation’s single largest pre-compliance forest carbon transaction to date. The transaction will consist of a series of projects focused on developing compliance-ready carbon offsets registered under the recently approved Climate Action Reserve (CAR) forestry protocol Version 3.0. These offsets would be used to comply with emissions reduction goals under California’s landmark legislation, Assembly Bill 32.
The transaction will sequester an additional 1,500,000 tons of carbon dioxide over the next five years in excess of what would have otherwise occurred. The investment in the projects will be made through the Eco Products Fund, LP (EPF) – a private equity vehicle co-managed by Equator and New Forests, Inc.
Sierra Pacific’s Chief Financial Officer Mark Emmerson stated that SPI is pleased to be able to participate in California’s carbon market with Equator. “This project demonstrates the utility of California’s new forestry protocol, and recognizes the value of working forests in meeting the state’s climate change goals and ecosystem sustainability.” Emmerson added “We are pleased to be able to work with a global leader like Equator in this effort”.
Overall, some 60,000 acres of SPI’s private timberland in California will be dedicated to this transaction. The projects will be submitted to the Climate Action Reserve for registration in the Reserve’s registry of carbon offset credits consistent with CAR’s recently approved forest protocol; Version 3.0. The Climate Action Reserve is a national offsets program working to ensure integrity, transparency and financial value in the U.S. carbon market. The protocol was approved by the Climate Action Reserve on September 1, and endorsed by the California Air Resources Board on September 24, 2009.
Mountain Log Homes is pleased to partner with companies like Sierra Pacific…helping us reach our Green Building and Sustainable Building Goals.

Rocky Mountain Log Homes Receives Award
By Rocky Mountain Log Homes
Missoula, MT (March 4, 2008)
Rocky Mountain Log Homes Receives Stewardship Partner Award
Rocky Mountain Log Homes' Certified Forester Pat Connell was on-hand at the 2008 Elk Camp in Reno, NV, February 21-24, to accept a Stewardship Partner Award from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Connell and Rocky Mountain Log Homes received the award for enhancing elk habitat with the Spring Mink Stewardship Program.
The Spring Mink Stewardship was a fuels reduction effort between the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Rocky Mountain Log Homes that included pre-commercial thinning of dead conifers and slashing of 700 acres and the installation of 11,000 feet of fire line in the Bitterroot National Forest in March of 2007. After a prescribed burn in the spring of 2007, the area should be restored to its historical condition of a ponderosa pine forest covered with lush forage, making for a perfect winter range for elk.
